Why do I need proofreading?
We all make misteaks
Yes, of course that’s a joke. But, the truth of the matter is, when we are the ones doing the writing we frequently overlook typographical and grammatical errors. Even when we go back to proofread the text, we frequently miss errors because we have reduced objectivity about the thoughts being conveyed. That’s why it is critically important to have a second set of eyes focused purely on the objective accuracy of that text.
SpelL Check Isn’t Enough
Spell check does not yet have ability to fully understand the nuances and context of the English language. Even spell check software which claims to point out grammatical errors is not always effective. Spell check doesn’t catch wrong words which also happen to be correctly spelled words.
The Information Super Highway is Full of Potholes
As more and more people electronically publish more and more text, it seems like quality control has been carelessly tossed out of the window. I have seen major news outlets and magazines publish articles online which contain typos and elementary school level grammatical errors.
It Does Matter
While some people may not seem to think accuracy is important, it does undermine confidence in an organization’s level of quality control when that organization publishes materials with careless spelling and grammatical errors.
The Cream Rises to the Top
This is a competitive world market. Only authors, writers, and organizations who show their care for quality and accuracy are going to stay at the top. If you’re a self-publishing author who only wants to sell 4 e-books, then don’t worry about it. If you want to be taken seriously, make the investment to ensure quality.
